The Global Interface (GIF Module)
The MetaKON Global Interface GIF module is an
ideal tool for integrating different systems on the basis of a standard. GIF is a
universal module for bidirectional, configurable data exchange and interprocess
communication with external systems, such as M-CAD, E-CAD, ERP, CAD, FEM, DTP, archiving,
PC applications, etc. The exchange format conforms to ISO-STEP.
The Global Interface GIF enables about
60 - 70 % of the total effort to be achieved with the standard PDM
interface tool, as compared with project-specific interface implementations.
A homogenous integration base, which also
allows the outlay for maintenance and customization work to be significantly reduced, is
thus available for all planned PDM integrations.
The CAD Interface
MetaKON facilitates part and drawing-oriented
designs by integrating different 2D and 3D CAD systems.
The most important aspects of a
drawing-oriented design are the way in which a new drawing is filed and the accompanying
exchange of drawing title-field data on the one hand and locating and loading existing
drawings on the other hand. Customer orders generally require new drawings to be generated
or existing drawings to be modified and filed away in their new form.
In addition to this functionality, MetaKON
permits efficient parts management through its integration with CAD systems.
Firstly, part views and models can be created and parts managed and located - both for
standard parts and special parts - and secondly, these views and models can be loaded and
positioned. In addition, a classification according to characteristics tables (DIN
4000/4001 and ISO 13584), designs of variants and management of master drawings are
supported for both standard and repeat parts.
Product structures are generated
automatically in Metaphase by exporting CAD parts list information via the CAD interface.
Conversely, you can also generate a pool of parts from a Metaphase product structure, to
allow views and models to be loaded on the CAD side.

Integration and interfaces to ERP / MRP
Using MetaKON enables a complete product
model to be developed step by step during the development and design processes. All the
components (parts and assemblies) of the product are incorporated in a hierarchical,
relational tree structure in the form of a part master-record object. Other graphical and
non-graphical product description data, such as drawings or calculations, are linked to
the part objects as documents by means of relations. The product data and its history is
thus made available in its entirety for future use.
The integration of PDM and ERP/MRP permits a
company-wide flow of information between Development, Design, Production and the
commercial departments. The product structure, and thus also the parts list including all
the associated part master records, is transferred from MetaKON to Production Planning.
The work-processing system can moreover access all the PDM data which is relevant for
generating work schedules, such as drawings or the characteristics of standard parts, as
well as other documents pertinent to production. The number of the generated work schedule
is entered in the part master record in MetaKON. The materials master data in ERP/MRP
which is important for the design process, such as the price, availability and delivery
period, can be retrieved using MetaKON.
The integration of MetaKON and ILOS, the
production logistics system from Lipro GmbH, is currently in preparation. An interface is
available for linking Metaphase and SAP R/3.
