Role of WAMware
Much as "glueware" contributes to software integration, WAMware
facilitates the critical dovetailing of management and end users
recognizing that
energizing our peopleware is the key to deriving business benefit in this culminating
phase of enterprise product development.
And why WAMwareTM? Very
simply
a catalyst to make things happen by cutting through management rhetoric and
user smokescreens and motivating a top-to-bottom team focused on end-to-end process
automation.
Good support services are generally available from software authors, their
resellers, and associated engineering consulting organizations... graduating from hotline
and training services for end users through implementation assistance for CAD/CAM/CAE
and PDM
project teams. On the other hand, engineering and executive management have found that
general business consultants are not close enough to the technology to help guide
strategic implementation. It is this vertical connection of strategy with technology that
WAMware uniquely provides.
WAMwares founder, Wayne A. McClelland (aha, the WAM! -- see
Biographical Sketch), is well known in the
worldwide CAD/CAM/CAE/PDM community for his motivational style and unique ability to connect
technical detail to business impact. Often complimented as "the only CAD executive
that can authoritatively demo the software", Wayne combines energy and in-depth
knowledge as key ingredients to unify management and end users toward the shared goal of
re-engineering the product development process.
Testimonials
"Wayne contributed significantly to the success of SDRC with his unique
ability to authoritatively and motivationally communicate with customers on both
management and technical issues. We are pleased to be the first customer of Waynes
new company and to continue to leverage his talents to the benefit of our I-DEAS users
worldwide."
Albert F. Peter, Chairman, SDRC; August 1996.
"Wayne McClelland is known by thousands of Japanese engineers as Mr.
I-DEAS. The Sony Corporation is very pleased to have established a partnership with
WAMware in order to accelerate the implementation of enterprise product
development at Sony and other major
Japanese manufacturing companies."
Yoshimitsu Nakayama, Manager, Mechanical
Design Automation, Sony.
"Through our working together also in
previous years with SDRC, we have come to know Mr. McClelland as always a reliable,
competent, accepting, and communicative partner who grasps our problems and has helped us
with realistic solutions. We expect, by means of Mr. McClelland's personality and personal
style, that an enthusiasm will also be awakened in our management for the conversion of
our Process Opportunity Analysis (POA) recommendations into reality. This would not be so likely if presented by internal
Siemens people."... Dr. Horst Eisenack, Siemens ASI.
"We have been pleased with the result of
the WAMware POA study and are currently working with TESIS WAMware in Germany to implement
the recommended measures. We are confident, that we will be successful this time following
the advice form Mr. McClelland and his partners."... Friedhelm Steinhilber,
President, BDT.
Overview of Consulting Services
Specifically, the following services are provided personally by Wayne to end
customers:
Management Consulting Products
As WAMware works to impact the business success of its clients, we are also
intent on breaking the consultants natural tendency to perpetuate involvement. A key
objective of all WAMware contracts is to quickly work itself "out of the loop".
Certainly consulting projects performed by WAMware are tailored to the needs of
each client, however the following examples characterize representative activities and
resulting benefits.
Executive Advisor
Client: A manufacturing company embarking on the
implementation of its core CAD/CAM/CAE system. WAMwares direct "customer" is the
executive management committee.
Service: WAMware is retained to conduct quarterly visits to the client
site (or sites) to meet for 2 days with end users, project leaders and CAD/CAM management,
and then report an assessment of progress and bottlenecks to the executive management
committee (board of directors, executive team, or divisional management committee).
WAMwares primary role is to be the "catalyst" by cutting through the
inevitable personal and technical uncertainties to assure success.
WAMware Involvement: 3 working days per quarter for 6-18 months.
Management Kickstart
Client: A manufacturing company embarking on, or stalled
during, the implementation of its core CAD/CAM/CAE system. WAMwares direct
"customer" is the executive management committee or in some cases the CAD/CAM
management team.
Service: WAMware has developed an informative and stimulating
half-day seminar to focus managers on the key issues of technology, people,
and process that will drive the success of the implementation. This is a
no-nonsense, get-to-the-meat-of-it session that will provide actionable
strategies and day-to-day tactics, leveraging the best and worst practices
gleaned from visiting hundreds of
customer sites. An optional 3-hour "hands on" module gives top- and
middle-management the chance to actually get their hands on the software (only prereq is
"mouse literacy")... to remove the mystique and provide ammo to blow away the
inevitable user smokescreens and excuses.
WAMware Involvement: 1 day preparation and 1 day on-site.
Management Training for Effective
CAD/CAM/CAE/PDM Implementations
Client: A manufacturing company embarking on the
implementation of CAD/CAM/CAE/PDM system. WAMwares direct
"customer" is the executive management committee or in some cases the CAD/CAM
management team.
Service: WAMware -- and specifically its founder, Wayne McClelland -- is unique
in its ability to train and mentor top managers in how to drive for successful
implementation of CAD/CAM/CAE/PDM. This uniqueness stems from its
neutrality (not wed to a specific CAD or PDM vendor) yet in-depth knowledge of
the technologies, the challenges, and ultimately the path to a successful
implementation. Beyond knowledge alone, Wayne (see biographical
sketch) has an uncanny ability to make even the most complex technologies
understandable by managers and to relate these technologies to daily management
actions that will be critical to success.
WAMware Involvement: 2 day on-site management training, plus
one or two 1-day quarterly review visits.
Process Opportunity Analysis
Client: A manufacturing company embarking on, or stalled
during, the implementation of its core CAD/CAM/CAE system. WAMwares direct
"customer" is the executive management committee or in some cases the CAD/CAM
management team.
Service: WAMware visits the customer site and interviews key
end users, middle managers, and divisional top management with the objective
of identifying key short- and mid-term improvement projects that can impact
the overall throughput of the mechanical product development process. This
"Process Opportunity Analysis" has been successful in giving a "running start"
to new installations as well as a "mid-life kicker" to existing sites with
even many years of reasonable success with CAD/CAM/CAE/PDM.
WAMware Involvement: 3 working days.
Implementation Planning
Client: A manufacturing company nearing selection of its core
CAD/CAM/CAE system. WAMwares direct "customer" is the executive management
committee or CAD/CAM/CAE implementation leader.
Service: The client contracts with WAMware to be a member of its
implementation planning team. The team first documents the "as-is" and
"to-be" process and then prepares a detailed plan for phase in (training
required, integration software required, change in process, incentive changes, benefit
metrics, required startup databases and catalogs, etc.).
WAMware Involvement: 10 working days over 2-3 months.
Implementation Audit
Client: A manufacturing company using CAD/CAM/CAE/PDM, but unsure if its processes
and implementation are optimized for business benefit. WAMwares direct
"customer" is the executive management committee or CAD/CAM/CAE implementation
leader.
Service: WAMware does an initial audit of implementation status including
in-depth interviews with end users, middle management, executive management and
"customers" of the process (e.g. downstream departments, suppliers). WAMware
documents technical and process recommendations.
WAMware Involvement: 10 working days over 1-2 months.
Product Plan Critical Review
Client: A supplier of engineering software planning a major product
development and marketing launch. WAMwares direct "customer" is the CEO or
executive management team.
Service: WAMware reviews the technical and marketing plans for the
software product and its launch including interviews with key technologists, product
planners, market analysts, and prospective customers. WAMware documents recommendations to
assure success of both the development and launch of the product.
WAMware Involvement: 4 working days over 1 month.
Demonstration Skills Workshop
Client: A supplier of engineering software desiring to improve the
effectiveness of product demonstrations. WAMwares direct "customer" is the
CEO or executive management team.
Service: WAMware conducts an in-house 2 day workshop that provides a
"kickstart" for your application engineers... an immediate and noticeable
improvement in their demonstration skills and techniques... and put them on the path to
becoming your strategic weapon in capturing the emotions and "votes" of your
prospects. The workshop will benefit both your newer engineers and your top-gun veterans.
WAMware Involvement: 3 working days.
