I-DEAS Integration Demo
Design, Drafting, Simulation, and Manufacturing of a Piston

This very simple example is intended to illustrate, via hands-on exercise, the ease of use and inherently integrated applications of the SDRC I-DEAS Master Series product. The user needs only a beginner's understanding of I-DEAS, perhaps having run through the I-DEAS QuickStart guide.

bulletIcon panel commands are noted in bold.
bulletGraphics region geometric selections are noted in [brackets]
bulletPop-up menus invoked with the righthand mouse button are noted as [MB3].

Please send any comments and suggestions to Wayne McClelland.

Design

bulletApplication=Design, Task=Master Modeler
bulletPolyline... [start at the upper left point and sketch clockwise six line segments, ending at the first point]
bulletConstraint icon subpanel... Ground... [upper left point]
bulletDrag... [dimension arrowheads... to size the geometry about as shown below]
bulletFillet (2d)... r=50
bulletDrag... the radius dimension as desired

initial sketch sketch filleted

bulletRevolve... [pick the section], [MB2], [centerline]... 180degrees
bulletPerspective-View... Shaded-Hardware
bulletSketch-in-Place... [on cut plane]
bulletCircle-center... [sketch the wrist pin section]
bulletExtrude... Flip... Until-next
bulletFillet... [MB3=edge-chaining-on], [the wrist pin/piston intersection]... r= about 7mm
bulletName..."piston"

Drafting

bulletTask=Drafting Setup
bulletCreate-Layout... make a 4 view A2 size drawing
bulletSection-View... as shown below

piston drawing

Design Modifications

bulletTask=Master Modeler
bulletSketch-in-Place... [right side of symmetry plane]
bulletCircle-center-edge... [above grounded point], [center of left vertical edge]... for recess
bulletRectangle... sketch 2 rectangles for ring grooves
bulletRevolve... [MB3=Section Options, Stop at Intersections]... [pick around pie wedge], [rectangle], [rectangle]

Simulation

bulletApplication=Simulation... Task=Boundary Conditions
bulletDisplacement-Restraint... [2 sym planes]... x=y=free... okay
bulletDisplacement-Restraint... [wrist pin symmetry plane]... okay
bulletPressure... [recess surface]... p=100
bulletDisplay-Filter... Finite Elements... All-off... Elements on
bulletTask=Meshing
bulletAuto-Settings... improve distortion .02 and set to "on"
bulletSolid-Mesh... [pick part]
(Note: In some situations the meshing might fail because of the pole in the piston "recess" surface. In that event, simply Define-Shell-Mesh, [pick recess surface], Free-Mesh-Options, Maximum-area-plane=on... and then Generate-Solid-Mesh.)

Manufacturing

bulletApplication=Manufacturing... Task=Assemble Setup
bulletCreate Assembly... Add Component [pick part]
bulletApplication=Manufacturing... Task=Generative Machining
bulletCreate Job
bulletAdd-Operation... Copy-Mill
bulletSelect-Surfaces... MB3=all
bulletGenerate tool paths (taking all defaults)
bulletAnimate
